How to apply for a volunteer role

We really love our volunteers! The more people – just like you – who give their time freely to us, the more we can do to improve our patients’ experience in and out of hospital.

The application process could take as little as four weeks, and up-to 12 weeks – please be patient.

Tell us about yourself

We need to know a little bit about you so we can make sure you’re the right fit for the right role.

We ask about your skills and experience, what you can offer, and what you want to get out of volunteering with us.

We need two references from two people who have known you longer than a year or more. One reference should be from someone like a previous manager, supervisor, or teacher.

Remember, you need to send the reference request forms to your referees, and they need to be returned to us as quickly as possible.

Let’s meet

If we think you've got what it takes, we’ll invite you in for an interview so we can get to know each other a little better.

The interview may be one-on-one or with a group of other applicants.

After interview

We’ll let you know as soon as possible after your interview if you’ve been successful.

If you are successful, you’re nearly a fully-fledged volunteer. Before you're given a start date, we need to do a couple of checks...

Checks and clearances

Disclosure and baring service (DBS)

Depending on your role, you’ll need to take a DBS check. To complete your DBS check, you have to provide various documents – but don’t worry, we’ll let you know what you need to bring.

Occupational health checks

We’ll ask you to fill in a health questionnaire form. Make sure you send it back as quickly as possible.

Depending on your answers, you may need to attend an appointment with our occupational health team.

Induction, training, and introductions


To help you hit the ground running, we’ll invite you to our volunteers’ induction. It includes some really important information about what we do, how we do it, and some triaining about the law so you can safely perform your role.

It’s really important you attend - you won't be able to start until you have.

You’ll also have a meeting with your supervisor (we call it a placement induction).


You’ll get on-the-job training by your placement supervisor, in the department where you’ll be based.
