About our Early Pregnancy Unit

The team on our Early Pregnancy Unit (EPU) offer you specialist care if you are in the early stage of your pregnancy and are experiencing some problems.

It's important that you know that our EPU is not a 24 hour service. If you are pregnant and experience some pain or bleeding at the weekend or on a bank holiday, please go to one of our Emergency Departments so that our teams can look after you.

Conditions cared for by Early Pregnancy Unit

You might be seen by our EPU team if you have a positive urine test for pregnancy and have:

  • mild vaginal bleeding (18 weeks pregnant)
  • abdominal pain which you are controlling with normal painkillers (18 weeks pregnant)
  • a possible or suspected ectopic pregnancy
  • had an ectopic pregnancy in the past
  • had a miscarriage in the past
  • had a molar pregnancy in the past.

We will also look after you if:

  • a scan has confirmed that you have had a miscarriage
  • you have had a termination of pregnancy, and may have retained some products of conception.

Early pregnancy unit (EPU) referrals

At Ealing Hospital

Our Early Pregnancy Unit at Ealing Hospital offers rapid appointments to assess and look after women who are up to 12 weeks, 6 days pregnant and who are experiencing pain or bleeding.

We accept referrals from:

  • GPs
  • Emergency Departments
  • Urgent care centres
  • local family planning clinics
  • pregnant women (self referrals)

Outside working hours, we accept referrals from our Emergency Department reception.

At Northwick Park Hospital

Our Gynaecology Direct Referral Clinic at Northwick Park Hospital offers appointments to assess women who are less than 20 weeks pregnant, and are experiencing pain or bleeding.

We accept referrals from:

  • GPs
  • Marie Stope clinic
  • Emergency Departments
  • Urgent Care Centres (UCC)
  • Antenatal Clinic (ANC)
  • our on-call gynaecology team.

Please note that our clinic at Northwick Park is not a walk-in service and therefore we cannot accept self-referrals.
