About cancer services
Our cancer services team provide you with care and support if you have, or suspect you may have, cancer.
If your GP is concerned that you may have cancer, they will ask us to see you within two weeks (known as a two week wait referral). Find out more about our two week wait referrals.
At your appointment, you will be seen by one of our specialist clinicians, and you may need to have some tests performed to help us diagnose you. Most of these tests can be done while you are an outpatient, but some may need you to stay in hospital for a short time.
If you do have a confirmed diagnosis of cancer, a specialist team of clinicians (kown as a multidisciplinary team, or MDT) will meet to discuss your condition and how best to treat you.
Our cancer nursing team
Our cancer nursing team are highly trained clinical nurse specialists (CNS). They support you through your diagnosis and treatment by:
- advising you on how to control your symptoms
- providing you with information about tests and treatment
- working closely with specialist doctors
- assisting with planning for your discharge, and financial support
- offering emotional support to you and your family.
One of our Clinical Nurse Specialists will also act as your designated key worker. With your consent, they will:
- ensuring that you, your relatives and friends have access to information, expert advice and support about cancer and its management
- help you to contact members of your clinical team (MDT) if you need to speak to them
- referr you to another key worker, if you need to be cared for at another hospital or in the community.
