Empowering quality: elevating care and careers

Empowering quality - elevating care and careers[pdf] 4MB is an ambitious five-year strategy for our nursing, midwifery, and allied health professional teammates.

Rooted in our HEART values and building on our Trust strategy, Our Way Forward, this strategy aims to empower our care professionals to become influential leaders, enable better education opportunities, and above all, lead the way to becoming outstanding.

Welcome from Lisa, Chief Nurse

About our care teams

Together, our nurses, midwives, allied healthcare professionals, and healthcare support workers represent over half of our total workforce.

They truly are the backbone of our Trust, with roles in direct patient care, management, education, and decision making.

And around three quarters of our care teammates live locally, which means that they not only have a professional stake in our strategy, but they’re also members of the communities we serve.

Working together to make our strategy a success

We spent a lot of time talking to our nursing, midwifery, and AHP teammates to find out what matters most to them, and what makes them proud to be part of Team LNWH.

But we can’t make this strategy a success on our own. We also worked with patients and patient representatives, other colleagues, and trusted partners, to ensure our strategy includes objectives and goals that are meaningful to them, too.

Our vision for nurses, midwives, and AHPs

Our vision is empowering quality: elevating care and careers.

It reflects our commitment to making our trust a leader in nursing, midwifery, and AHP care excellence, and an exemplary place to work for our care teams.

Our objectives

Our objectives set out how we plan to realise our vision. They offer our employees clarity about what we will do to empower quality.

We will empower our teams to reduce patient harm and improve quality care

We will:

  • Empower our teams to shape care decisions and drive innovation.
  • Strengthen patient care and reduce avoidable harm using evidence and best practices.
  • Nurture and enable exemplary evidence-based care and continuous improvement.
  • Provide high-quality, equitable and empathetic care to our patients, their carers, and those at the end of life.
  • Advocate and support the patient safety incident response framework (PSIRF) through compassionate engagement, system-based learning, proportionate responses to patient safety incidences and supportive oversight.

We will cultivate leadership and foster a safe and inclusive work environment

We will:

  • Design and implement a co-ordinated leadership programme tailored specifically for our nursing, midwifery, and AHP teammates.
  • Promote inclusivity and belonging at all levels through diversity training, inclusive leadership, resource groups, and open forums.
  • Foster and develop a physically and psychologically safe working environment through training, support mechanisms and personal safety innovations.

We will create a workplace culture of meaningful recognition

We will:

  • Implement a recognition programme where outstanding contributions from staff members are acknowledged publicly.
  • Establish mentorship programmes where seasoned employees mentor newer staff members, emphasising the importance of recognising and celebrating achievements.
  • Host events to honour exceptional performance and contributions, involving both internal staff and external stakeholders.

We will fully embrace the use of digital care and our electronic patient record

We will:

  • Leverage digital technology to enhance patient safety, refine clinical practices, and elevate the overall patient experience.
  • Continuously explore and implement cutting-edge digital technologies.
  • Reduce the variation in digital literacy and numeracy amongst our workforce.

We will enhance research opportunities and impact

We will:

  • Cultivate a research-informed and proactive workforce.
  • Advocate for the removal of barriers hindering research activity within NMAHP roles.
  • Bolster our research capacity.

Harnessing our potential

Empowering quality: elevating care and careers is an exciting plan designed to harness the full potential of our diverse and highly skilled healthcare professional workforce.

By anchoring our work in our Trust strategy, Our Way Forward, and building on our HEART values, we want to radically transform health outcomes for north west Londoners, attract and retain top talent, and exceed the expectations of the communities we serve.
