Green Plan to help tackle climate change

Climate change poses a major threat to our planet, but it also has an impact on health.

In London alone, exposure to emissions was the cause of premature deaths of approximately 4,000 people in 2019*.

The big picture

London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust supports The Greener NHS programme

There are two targets for NHS England:

  • For the emissions we control directly (the NHS Carbon Footprint), we will reach net zero by 2040, with an ambition to reach an 80% reduction by 2028 to 2032;
  • For the emissions we can influence (our NHS Carbon Footprint Plus), we will reach net zero by 2045, with an ambition to reach an 80% reduction by 2036 to 2039.

What is LNWT going to do?

The Trust has developed an Action Plan covering how it will help meet the 2040 target.

There will be a focus on nine areas:

  • Workforce and System Leadership
  • Sustainable Models of Care
  • Digital Transformation
  • Travel and Transport
  • Estates and Facilities
  • Medicines
  • Supply Chain and Procurement
  • Food and Nutrition
  • Adaptation

What has the Trust achieved so far?

  • Health and Wellbeing festival highlighted how to prevent future health problems through preventative care
  • All ambulance cars are now hybrid
  • A salary sacrifice scheme has been made available for all staff to lease hybrid vehicles
  • Paper reductions through the use of specialist software
  • Use of Warp-It since 2019 has prevented five tonnes of perfectly usable assets going to the landfill, as well as saving almost 20 tonnes of CO2e

*This includes deaths from all causes including respiratory, lung cancer and cardiovascular disease.
