Meet the people who keep our hospitals running behind-the scenes

Ealing Hospital celebrates the small army of non-clinical staff who keep it running behind-the-scenes with an exhibition which includes a 103-year-old volunteer, a pair of hungry raptors and a man as handy with a screwdriver as a surgeon is with a scalpel.

Beryl Carr started volunteering at the tender age of 83 in the Friends Café and since turning 100 has become something of a celebrity picking up a CBE and being featured on TV and in national newspapers.

Bio mechanical engineer Tamir Rajani and his team are responsible for maintaining and repairing some 4,000 medical devices used in the hospital, while resident peregrines Dusty and Freddy are one of the most successful breeding pairs in the capital thanks to the efforts of Ealing Wildlife Trust

Tamir said: “Some of the equipment we maintain like the ventilators is complex but you’d be surprised how many times we get called out only to find something hasn’t put the plug in or switched something on.”

The exhibition is in the Galleria, Level Three, Ealing Hospital. Access is via the stairs opposite WHSmith in the main entrance.
