Northwick nurses shortlisted for national awards

Maria Sarroza has been shortlisted in the Practice Educator of the Year category of the Nursing Times Workforce Awards.

She has supported more than 40 colleagues in the past year from students and newly qualified nurses to Band Fives who have joining the recently expanded Recovery Unit from other clinical areas.

Maria, who is the paediatric lead for recovery, also trains internationally educated nurses having been one herself and has developed a system where all her trainees receive individual learning plans.

This includes an open-door policy encouraging nurses to speak frankly about areas of learning they may be struggling with.

A recent example was two learners wrestling with maths calculations for their IV Passport assessment.

Maria provided one-to-one training and devised bespoke tests to evaluate their learning before their assessment which they subsequently passed.

Maria believes in leading by example and still attends training herself to ensure her practice is up to date. This has allowed her to help develop the trust’s new paediatric development competency programme.

Intisar Ibrahim, Senior Brent Health Inequality Specialist Nurse has also been shortlisted in the Preceptor of the Year category at the awards.

Teaching is a way of life in Intisar’s family with a husband and two uncles who are lecturers.

“I was firstborn in a large family so had the responsibility looking out for my siblings and helping them with their studies as well as my own children.

“I’ve been a nurse for more than 25 years and want our nurses to be the best they can be by offering a safe positive learning environment whether that be student nurses, registered nurses or junior doctors.”

Intisar, who works as a senior acute floor nurse at Northwick Park, has 17 years of experience in preceptorship.

“My ambition is to eventually move into a permanent teaching role where I can share my experiences to inspire the next generation of nurses and ensure their success within the profession.”
