Surgeon Evie wins national award
Congratulations to Evie Mensah who won the Clinical Excellence Award for Consultants category at the annual Black Healthcare Awards.
“I’ve got to where I am through hard work, not giving up and never taking ‘no’ for an answer,” said the eye surgeon and clinical lead who works at Central Middlesex Hospital.
“I was discouraged from pursuing medicine at school but have always found great motivation in proving people wrong.
“I always assumed surgery was too time-consuming for someone with children until a senior colleague suggested eye surgery. I did some research and just fell in love with it although it wasn’t all plain sailing.”
No surprise that one of her favourite quotes is from Samuel Beckett: “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.”
