Vote for your unsung NHS hero

The NHS is all about doctors and nurses, right?

Actually, the Unsung Hero Awards pay tribute to the 315,000 non-clinical staff keeping our hospitals running behind the scenes - from cleaners and cooks to admin and volunteers.

London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust has 1,800 non-clinical staff across its four hospital and community sites.

They include 90 year-old volunteer Beryl Jones, who was nominated for an award last year

Beryl and her daughter were among the first patients to use Northwick Park when it opened in 1970. They continued to come to the hospital until Beryl’s daughter passed away.

She started volunteering 50 years ago. She began by helping mentally disabled children including setting up a toy library, before working for the Red Cross and finally Northwick Park Hospital, where she has volunteered for the past 16 years.

“I always felt that I should volunteer as a thank you to the hospital over the years and it’s lovely to get the recognition.”

There are eleven categories this year with a closing date of September 30. For details, see www.unsungheroawards.com
