Your first physiotherapy appointment

There are a few things you will need to know when attending your first physiotherapy outpatient appointment:

About your appointment

The first session may last up to an hour so we can assess your history and examine you thoroughly.

What to bring

  • You may be asked to fill out forms, so bring your reading glasses if you need them. We can assist you with the forms if necessary.

  • We’ll ask some questions about your health, so bringing a list of your medications will be helpful. Also any tests or scan results that you've had elsewhere.

  • The examination may require you to undress, so it’s a good idea to bring shorts and a vest top, or wear clothing that makes it easy for us to check your movement.

At your appointment

  • Check in at the kiosk when you arrive. If you can't use the check-in kiosk, speak to our reception team.

  • We’ll ask about your home, family, work and hobbies to understand the physical demands of your daily life.

  • At the end of the assessment, we’ll discuss and agree on your treatment goals. In some cases, your treatment may begin at your next visit.

Missed physiotherapy appointments

If you can't come to your appointment, tell us. Call the number in your letter at least 24 hours before your appointment and we'll give you a new date.

We may discharge you back to your GP if you:

  • miss two appointments in a row without telling us

  • cancel your appointment and do not rebook it within four weeks.
