About our intestinal rehabilitation service
Our intestinal rehabilitation team look after you if you experience severe intestinal failure.
This a rare condition, where your small intestine can't digest and absorb enough nutrients and/or your body doesn't reabsorb the fluids produced by the intestines. This leads to problems such as weight loss and diarrhoea, which in turn can cause malnutrition and dehydration.
Our service is based at Central Middlesex Hospital, and is a national service for people experiencing severe intestinal failure. It is includes a range of diffrent healthcare professionals, including consultants, and a large team of specialist nurses, dietitians and pharmacists. We have two dedicated intestinal rehabilitation surgeons, as well as a Psychological Medicines Unit.
Conditions cared for by our intestinal rehabilitation service
Our team care for you if you:
- have severe intestinal failure due to intestinal disease or dysfunction
- have had intestinal surgery and need to have parenteral nutrition at home
- are being considered for intestinal failure surgery to restore your intestine's continuity, or correct a gastrointestinal problem
- are not absorbing nutrients from your food very well (this is called intestinal insufficiency), and need support to improve your bowel function and/or need enteral nutrition at home.
Research in our intestinal rehabilitation service
Members of our intestinal rehabilitation team regularly take part in research relating to intestinal failure, including on the underlying conditions leading to intestinal failure, and on artificial nutrition support.
