Beryl gets the royal treatment
Royalty came knocking not once but twice for Ealing Hospital volunteer Beryl Carr who recently celebrated her 100th birthday.
The plucky centenarian had already received a card from the Queen but this week received a personal visit Deputy Lord Lieutenant Richard Kornicki.
The Deputy Lord Lieutenant is Her Majesty’s representative in the London Borough of Ealing.
The role dates back to the reign of Henry VIII where individuals had the power to raise militias and quell civil unrest in the King’s name. Today, it plays a more sedate role supporting the work of community and voluntary organisations across the borough.
Beryl, who still works in the Friends Café in Ealing Hospital, came to Richard’s attention after becoming something of a media starlet appearing on TV and in the newspapers in recent weeks.
Beryl said: “I’ve been working in the café for 18 years working on the till. This is my lifeline. I enjoy the friendship and camaraderie and helping people less fortunate than myself I can’t believe I’m 100 but I am!”
The Deputy Lord Lieutenant presented the pensioner with a letter congratulating her on her birthday and ongoing commitment to volunteering.
