Consultant becomes hospital chaplain

A retired medical consultant is seeing a different side of life on the wards as a hospital chaplain at Northwick Park.

Nowadays, it is spiritual rather than physical healing that preoccupies Anthony Kaiser who previously worked as a paediatrician.

Antony, 68, said: “I initially completed a chaplaincy volunteer course and began visiting the hospital in 2020. I subsequently applied to become the Jewish chaplain when my predecessor retired.

“A lot of patients don’t have visitors and feel isolated. I’m there to listen and talk with them about whatever they feel like talking about.

“It’s interesting coming from a medical background where the focus is on the practicalities of physically healing someone when we know a person’s mental state also plays a role in their recovery."

The hospital trust offers a multi-faith chaplaincy for its staff and patients.
