Dog’s wake-up call for critically ill patient

A dog is the last thing you expect to see in an intensive care unit but man’s (and woman’s) best friend sometimes provides that extra bit of TLC that makes all the difference.

Scottish Deerhound Silas just did that when intensivists at Northwick Park agreed he could visit owner Joanna Temple who remained largely unresponsive.

Silas worked his magic with a few snuffles and a bit of toe-licking and Joanna woke the next day.

Sadly, Silas and Joanna passed away several years after this heart-warming story but brother Bruce has recently donated a picture of Silas to intensive care as a thank you for the care his sister received.

“I still remember how great the doctors and nurses were with my sister and I am glad the picture has found a new home.”
