Hospital tribute to big-hearted mayor who put people first
Friends, family and medical professionals gathered outside Ealing Hospital today to pay tribute to the late councillor Ealing Tejinder Singh Dhami.
A memorial bench and plaque in honour of his tireless work raising money for charity Heartlink was unveiled by former Mayor of Ealing Mohinder Midha.
Fellow ward councillor Ranjit Dheer, OBE, reflected that his late friend would have been ‘mildly amused by the memorials but also that he was a great public servant who had left a lasting legacy.’
Heartlink provides advice and support to people living with heart conditions, especially those undergoing or recovering from hospital treatment.
The group, which now has more than 200 members, was originally set up with the support of Ealing cardiologist Professor Jaspal Kooner who saw the value of a support network outside hospital.
Tejinder, a long-time champion of Ealing Hospital, became aware of the group’s work after suffering heart problems himself and helped raise awareness of heart disease in Ealing.
He raised funds for various initiatives including night-time monitors for the heart failure team, oximeters to Heartlink members during the pandemic, and 50 chairs and footstalls for the hospital’s cardiology ward.
His popularity was reflected in the £7,000 raised for Heartlink by his family since he passed away,
Cllr Midha added: “He was a pillar in our community and respected and loved by many. We miss him but today is a positive example of what can be achieved when we all stand together and work together.”
