Hospital volunteer to get British Empire Medal

Big Ben welcomed 2023 in with a bong and Beryl Carr with a gong in the New Year Honours List.

The NHS’s oldest volunteer was thrilled to receive a letter from the Cabinet Office saying she has been awarded the British Empire Medal for her work as a volunteer at the Friends Café in Ealing Hospital.

It marked the end of an extraordinary 12 months for the centenarian who celebrates her 101st birthday this month.

Beryl gave numerous newspaper interviews and appeared on TV several times during the previous year with people fascinated by her longevity and appetite to continue volunteering in the café.

The Prime Minister recommended Beryl for the award after she won his Points of Light Award last year for her services as a volunteer.

“It was a real whirlwind last year and this is a lovely way to finish it all before getting back to normal.”

Beryl will be presented with her medal by the Lord Lieutenant later this year.
