Lola looks to new horizons

Dr Lola Oni has been awarded the prestigious Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing for her outstanding contribution to nursing.

The specialist nurse consultant in sickle cell and thalassaemia has enjoyed a 40 year career in the NHS and plans to retire later this year.

Lola said: “My advice to anyone starting out in nursing is to find your niche in a specialism you feel passionate about. It will give you career satisfaction which can sustain you for many years."

Lola runs the specialist sickle cell and thalassaemia unit at Central Middlesex Hospital. She followed in the footsteps of Dame Elizabeth Anionwu who helped set up the first dedicated centre in the UK in 1979.

“I’ve been lucky enough to have family, friends and mentors who’ve advised, encouraged and supported me throughout my career. They pushed me to be the best I can be, to have courage against all opposition, to aim high, and achieve my goals and aspirations.

 “It's been a fun journey"
