Midwifery award for Mercy
Mercy Sigauke isn’t often stuck for words but when she has won the annual Sister Gwen Richardson Midwifery Award it initially left her speechless.
“It was a complete surprise and one of the nicest things that has happened to me in my 13 years as a midwife.”
‘Approachable,’ ‘passionate’ and ‘encouraging,’ were some of the supporting comments from colleagues who nominated the senior midwife who started her career as a nurse at St Mark’s.
Her commitment to being a well-rounded midwife included a 16-month secondment as a bereavement specialist midwife and she encourages all junior nurses and midwives to take up secondment roles for learning development.
"The secondment gave me another perspective on maternity and bereavement care, given the diverse families we care for .It was invaluable in improving my communication skills."
So, what is next in line for much praised midwife?
I’d like to see our CQC rating improved. I know we can do it.”
