New plant powers up hospital

Northwick Park Hospital’s new energy plant has been switched on.

The energy centre houses a combined heat and power plant, which is able to generate and supply electrical power and low temperature hot water (LTHW) to the hospital.

This means it will provide 100% of the hospital’s LTHW, currently supplied from the existing steam boiler plant, along with approximately 85% of the total electrical power. The remaining 15% will come from the National Grid.

It’s estimated the plant will save the hospital the equivalent of 2,600 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year.

Jonathan Reid, Chief Financial Officer, said: “The development of this plant is a fantastic achievement and we’re very proud that it’s up and running.

“This is all thanks to the hard work of the estates team, and our sustainability lead Dr Arcangel Lagos, working with our commercial partners.

“This plant will support the Trust’s commitment to energy resilience, reducing costs, decarbonising, as well as help NHS England become net zero by 2040.”
