Surgeon finds global voice

Instructional YouTube videos on surgical procedures might sound like an accident waiting to happen but for tech loving surgeon Abdul Ahmed it is another way of sharing his knowledge with a wider audience.

The head and neck cancer specialist’s social media presence has bought him to the attention of medical colleagues working as far afield as Bangladesh, Pakistan and Nepal.

Abdul said: “I love teaching and the prospect of helping someone reach their potential. It’s rewarding to think that you have played some small part in the development of a colleague.”

Northwick Park’s maxillofacial department is currently setting up a fellowship which will give young surgical registrars the opportunity to spend several months working in cancer care in Pakistan.

Abdul added: “The biggest challenge in these countries is lack of  primary care services so patients present at hospital with cancer in its advanced stages.

“The fellowship will be a great learning opportunity for our young surgeons but they, in turn, will be able to share their skills.”
