About our stroke service
We care for you at Northwick Park Hospital if you have had a stroke, where we are home to one of eight hyper acute stroke units (HASUs) in London.
Our unit is based on Haldane and Herrick wards, and has 50 beds, including 16 hyper acute stroke beds and 34 stroke unit beds.
We provide thrombolysis 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Thrombolysis is a drug treatment which can be given within the first few hours after a stroke, and may dramatically reduce disability.
We also offer a seven-day transient ischaemic attack (TIA) service. TIA causes symptoms similar to a stroke but which only last a short time.
Conditions cared for by stroke service
We treat, investigate and rehabilitiate you if you have had a suspected stroke or Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA).

You may find these organisations helpful if you have had a stroke or TIA:

Research at our stroke service
Over the last year, over 200 of our patients took part in a number of clinical trials. These looked at all the major stages of stroke disease, from prevention to rehabilitation, and incuded research on:
- using new agents to reduce infarct size
- secondary prevention
- pharyngeal stimulation for swallowing problems
- robotic rehabilitation for upper arm stroke and continence management.
Stroke and TIA referrals
TIA referrals
Please do not use e-RS to refer patients who may have had a TIA.
If you think a patient may have had a TIA, please complete the TIA referral form.
GP referral form TIA[docx] 64KB
To complete the form, you must:
- document the clinical history for your patient. This helps our consultants triage patients in order to see urgent patients first.
- provide a list of your patient's current medication.
You can return the form to us by emailing our stroke TIA team.
You can also contact our TIA administrator on 020 8869 3214 or 020 8869 2298 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm).
If you have queries or need advice, you can get in touch with our stroke specialist nurse by contacting Northwick Park Hospital switchboard or on bleep 640.
